GPA...Couldn't care less!

May 19, 2007

Come 26th May and 3 digits separated by a decimal would be awarded to you. These 3 digits would tell you to the accuracy up to second decimal on how much you studied last semester. It is amazing the way this instrument works, isn't it? We always thought that hard work is too subjective but GPA measurement machine tells you precisely how much of it you did last semester! Or does it tell you your worth? Or the luck you had? Well, whatever it tells, it is something which DOES affect people. I often hear people saying, "I don't care!", "Couldn't care less" etc etc. But the same people are seen puzzled looking at the three digits and sure enough, spend some time pondering over what went wrong. Such people will not agree with me that they are in any way affected by GPA and I totally understand their viewpoint. I understand them because I "was like that" during my undergrad years.

Honestly, in my undergrad years, I don't even remember when were the results declared and who got what grade in the class and what did I get, for that matter. All I remember were the 3 digits and I had no time in the world to put things in perspective. Things started surfacing when the companies started coming for placement and more so, 3 years later when I started applying to global B Schools for my MBA. I wasn't very happy for what I had on my transcript. Or may be, they were not happy with the first digit on the left and that made me unhappy.

Life was so different at IIT that I forgot the main reason I was there for and the pains I had taken to get in that place. Don't get an idea that I was a useless bum but now when I put things in perspective, all I feel is that I could have done far better and doing far better would have opened new doors for me which never opened up. Though it is believed that GPA in MBA schools really doesn't matter but that was precisely the same idea I had when I was roaming around in IITs. So, you never know when it hits you and I have come to understand that whether you know it or not, these three digits called GPA DOES affect you. It's always safe to have a good one under your belt. After all, take it from me, it will never harm you :-)
